About

Digital Painting Series

My latest work still finds me very much in pursuit of the illusive quality of Light and Surface Effects, now in the form of Digital Paintings. I enjoy how colour and contrast, light and dark play off each other to create new and intriguing possibilities in my process. I am always looking for imaginative and delightful aspects in the image, often revealing unexpected symbols and meanings. This improvisational method offers the same intuitive and contemplative approach that I employ in my canvas paintings and inspires a complexity in each image that keeps me constantly intrigued and enthusiastic about the next step.

Following the same intuitive path as my Abstract Paintings on canvas, I start with randomly produced shapes and colours. Then I look for a pleasing arrangement or composition. I will enhance what I see though countless choices of colour, contrast, light and dark relationships to bring forward something recognizable. My Digital Works and my Abstract Paintings share the same qualities as Rorschach inkblots – having many interpretations.

Collaboration Series

This Collaboration Series was begun in early 2021 during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Participants were asked to draw “Doodles” using an online Video Conferencing “Whiteboard” or Mobile Phone “Notepad”. The “Doodles” were then interpreted as ideas and concepts that transformed the lines and shapes into ever–evolving and elaborate narrative compositions. Image editing software was used extensively to enhance the “Doodles” and bring the compositions to completion.

My inspiration stems from a fascination with this collaborative process. In the mid 1970’s, I would ask friends to make similar “Doodles” with me on newsprint table coverings at a local Café.

The results are always imaginative and delightful; revealing unexpected symbols and meanings. This improvisational method, now done digitally, offers me the same intuitive approach that I employ in my Abstract Paintings. What is common to both the Digital Works and the Abstract Paintings, is how this process of mark making inspires a complexity in my work.
